HISTORY OF THE GALLERY
Guy Brewster Hughes was born in Plattsburgh, NY Nov. 23, 1928. Descended
from one of the founding families of Lake Placid Village, Hughes grew up
in Lake Placid and graduated in 1947 from Lake Placid High School. He
was influenced and encouraged in his artistic efforts by his great aunt
Julia Brewster, herself a noted watercolorist.
In the 1980’s, Hughes returned to the Adirondacks
and renewed his interest in watercolor painting. He was invigorated both
by his native landscape and by that of the Caribbean, which he visited
several times. As a watercolorist, Hughes exhibited in Los Angeles,
Boston, Buffalo, at various Vermont locations, and locally. Mr. Hughes
died on June 11, 1992.
MISSION STATEMENT
Hughes’ great wish was that this library, which he loved, should one
day have a public space devoted to works of Adirondack artists. This
gallery is the fulfillment of that wish.
We invite the public to visit and experience the wide
range of talented artists and artisans who now show at the Gallery on a
regular basis. We are a group of over one dozen regional weavers,
painters, and crafts people who create and produce our own work.
Our unique location on Mirror Lake is a lovely
backdrop for our series of shows, which will bring the visitor close to
nature, the primary influence and inspiration for the artist/artisan on
hand who is demonstrating, and selling his work.
